Impaired sensorimotor gating in patients with non-epileptic seizures

The aim of the study was to identify possible disturbances of sensorimotor gating and habituation of the eye blink startle response, in patients with non-epileptic seizures (NES). Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex, as an operational measure of sensorimotor gating and habituation was studied in 21 patients with NES and in 22 healthy control subjects. Six NES patients were taking an...

Supplementary motor area seizures presenting as stumbling episodes

A healthy young boy presented with brief stumbling episodes of recent onset. Evaluation with prolonged EEG-video monitoring led to the diagnosis of supplementary motor area epilepsy. Focal seizures arising from the medial fronto-parietal cortex may present unusual diagnostic pitfalls in their clinical semeiology as well as their EEG characteristics.

Supplementary sensorimotor area epilepsy. Seizure localization, cortical propagation and subcortical activation pathways using ictal SPECT.

We studied clinical signs, EEGs and ictal cerebral blood flow by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in eight patients with intractable supplementary sensorimotor area (SSMA) seizures. SPECT scans were performed after injection of the regional cerebral blood flow tracer [99mTc]HMPAO (hexametylpropylene amine oxime) early in the ictal phase (2-5 s after seizure onset). Ictal SPECT...

Emerging patterns of neuronal responses in supplementary and primary motor areas during sensorimotor adaptation.

Acquisition and retention of sensorimotor skills have been extensively investigated psychophysically, but little is known about the underlying neuronal mechanisms. Here we examine the evolution of neural activity associated with adaptation to new kinematic tasks in two cortical areas: the caudal supplementary motor area (SMA proper), and the primary motor cortex (MI). We investigate the hypothe...
